Earthquake Alert: Recent 3.1 Magnitude Tremor in Delhi-NCR.

 

In Delhi-NCR, on Sunday, a magnitude 3.1 earthquake occurred on the Richter scale. Prior to this, on October 3, there were rapid jolts of an earthquake felt in the National Capital Region.


The National Center for Seismology tweeted, "Earthquake Magnitude: 3.1, occurred on 15-10-2023 at 16:08:16 IST, Latitude: 28.41 and Longitude: 77.41, Depth: 10 kilometers, Location: 9 kilometers east of Faridabad, Haryana." Earthquake Science on Sunday.

Why do earthquakes happen?

The Earth is primarily composed of four layers: the inner core, outer core, mantle, and crust. The lithosphere, the outermost layer, is made up of tectonic plates and other materials. It is around 50 kilometers thick.  There are a total of seven plates within the Earth, and these plates constantly move. When a majority of these plates start to shift, it indicates the onset of an earthquake.



How is the intensity of an earthquake measured?

The intensity of an earthquake is measured using the Richter scale, also known as the Richter Magnitude Scale. It is measured from the earthquake's epicenter.
